Dry Ridge & Hip

Mortar-Bedded Ridges Versus Dry Ridge

On a traditional roof, each ridge and hip tile sits on two thick beds of sand and cement, with the joints between tiles pointed up. The weight of the tile and the grip of the mortar are all that hold it. When the bedding shrinks, cracks or washes out, ridge tiles rock, leak at the joints and can be torn off in a gale.

A dry ridge system takes the mortar out of the picture. The ridge tiles are screwed through to a timber ridge batten held on adjustable brackets, the joints are covered by union clips, and a flexible roll seal underneath keeps out rain while letting air through.

Parts of a Dry Ridge & Hip System

Each component has a job to do, and leaving one out is how cheap dry ridge installs fail.

Ridge Ventilation & Condensation

Modern homes hold more moisture than older ones: more insulation, sealed windows, showers every day. That warm, damp air rises into the attic, and if it cannot get out it condenses on the underside of the roof, soaking timbers and insulation. A ventilated dry ridge lets that air escape at the highest point, which is exactly where it collects.

Paired with ventilation at the eaves, a vented ridge sets up a steady flow of air through the roof space. We look at your existing ventilation and insulation as part of the survey, so the ridge becomes one part of a balanced system rather than a guess.

FAQs

FAQs About Our Dry Ridge & Hip Service

Questions we are often asked about dry ridge and dry hip work.

Can you reuse my existing ridge tiles?

Usually, yes. Most ridge and hip tiles come off intact and are perfectly good once the old mortar is cleaned away, and reusing them keeps the roof looking as it did. If several are cracked, we source matching replacements or suggest a new set that suits the main tiles.

Does a vented ridge make the house colder?

A ventilated ridge lets moist air out of the roof space, not heat out of your rooms. The warmth in your home is held in by the insulation at ceiling level, and the attic above it is meant to stay cool and dry. Good airflow actually protects that insulation from getting damp.

Why do my ridge tiles keep coming loose?

Bedding mortar shrinks as it dries, then cracks as the roof moves and frost gets in. Once the bond goes, the ridge tile is simply resting there. Repointing fills the gaps for a while, but the underlying weakness stays, which is why a mechanical fix holds up better.

Is a dry hip different from a dry ridge?

The parts are similar, but a hip runs down the slope at an angle and finishes at the eaves, so it needs a hip iron at the bottom and a closure at the end. The batten and brackets also have to follow the line of the hip rather than sit level along the top.

Can a dry ridge go on a slate roof?

Yes. There are dry ridge systems made for slate as well as tiles, using a seal and fixings that suit the flatter surface. On a slate roof we often pair the ridge with slate vents lower down to give the roof space an even flow of air.

Professional Dry Ridge & Hip

Since 2018 we have been fitting dry ridge and dry hip systems to homes and commercial roofs in Dublin itself and out across Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and Louth. We can convert just the ridge, just the hips or the whole roof in one visit, and the work pairs well with a dry verge on a gabled house.
