What Chimney Repointing Involves

Repointing means replacing the outer layer of mortar between the bricks or stones of your chimney. The bricks themselves usually last for generations, but the joints between them are the weak point. Rain, frost and wind wear them back until the mortar is recessed, sandy or missing altogether.

We rake those joints out to a sound depth, clean them and pack in fresh mortar, finishing it to the profile that suits your house. That restores the weather seal of the stack and stops water tracking through the brickwork into your chimney breast.

What’s Included

Signs Your Chimney Needs Repointing

A chimney stands above everything else on the roof, so it weathers faster than the walls below. Look for these from the garden or the street.

  • Mortar recessed well behind the brick face
  • Sand or grit collecting in the gutters
  • Damp patches on the chimney breast indoors
  • Loose or missing bricks near the top
  • Plants growing out of the joints
  • White salt staining on the brickwork
  • Cracked flaunching around the pots
  • Peeling paper or paint on a chimney breast

Getting the Mortar Right

The wrong mortar can do more harm than leaving the joints alone, so we match the mix to the chimney rather than reaching for whatever is in the van.

FAQs

FAQs About Our Chimney Repointing Service

Answers to the things homeowners usually ask about repointing a chimney.

How often does a chimney need repointing?

There is no fixed timetable. Well-pointed brickwork on a sheltered chimney can go for decades, while an exposed stack on a coastal or hilltop house may need attention much sooner. The best guide is the joints themselves: once they are recessed or crumbling, it is time.

Can damp in my chimney breast come from the pointing?

Often, yes. Rain soaks into eroded joints and works its way down through the stack into the chimney breast, showing up as stains or peeling paint. Repointing is one possible fix, alongside checking the flaunching, the flashings and whether the chimney needs a cap or cowl.

Do you need scaffolding to repoint a chimney?

Yes, in almost every case. Repointing needs a safe, stable platform all the way round the stack for several hours of hand work, which a ladder cannot give. The cost of access is included in your written quote, so there are no extras added later.

Should I repoint or rebuild my chimney?

If the bricks are sound and the stack is upright, repointing is enough. If bricks are badly frost-damaged, the stack leans or the top courses are loose, rebuilding the upper section may be the safer option. We show you photos from the survey so you can see the condition for yourself.

Will repointing stop every leak around my chimney?

Only the ones caused by the brickwork. Water also gets in around the base through worn lead flashings and at the top through cracked flaunching. That is why we check all three on every chimney we repoint and tell you if anything else needs doing.
