What Is Liquid Waterproofing?

Lava 20 and Mariseal are polyurethane waterproofing membranes that go on as a liquid. We brush or roll them onto a prepared, primed surface, and they cure into a flexible, rubbery skin that bonds firmly to whatever is underneath. Because the coating is applied rather than laid, it has no laps or joints, and it follows every step, upstand and corner of the area.

Lava 20 comes from Owl and Mariseal from Maris Polymers. We choose between the two, and select the primer, according to the surface we are coating and how it will be used once the job is finished.

Where We Use Lava 20 & Mariseal

Liquid membranes earn their place on the jobs where sheet materials struggle: small areas with lots of edges, surfaces people walk on, and details that would need dozens of cuts and patches in felt or rubber.

Balconies & Terraces

A liquid coating wraps around railing posts, drains and door thresholds without a single cut, and cures to a surface that copes with everyday foot traffic. It is often the neatest way to waterproof a balcony that sits above a living room.

Box Gutters & Valleys

Lined box gutters behind parapets often fail at the joints and outlets. We clean them out, prime the old lining or timber, and coat the whole gutter as one continuous membrane that runs up the sides and down into the outlet.

Flat Roofs & Old Coverings

Where an existing felt or asphalt roof is still firmly bonded but starting to crack, a liquid membrane can often go straight over it after cleaning and priming, saving the cost and mess of a full strip-out.

Rooflights, Pipes & Upstands

Pipe collars, rooflight kerbs, chimney bases and wall abutments are where most flat roof leaks begin. A liquid coating, reinforced with fleece at the joints, seals each one tightly without relying on mastic.

Can liquid waterproofing go over my existing roof?

Often, yes. If the existing felt, asphalt, concrete or old coating is firmly bonded and dry, we can clean, repair and prime it and apply the membrane on top. If the old covering is lifting, holding water underneath or sitting on a soft deck, it needs to come off first, and we will tell you that at the survey.

Is a liquid membrane as good as a sheet roof?

On the right job, yes. It forms one continuous skin with no laps, which is a real advantage on small or detailed areas such as balconies, gutters and roofs crowded with pipes and rooflights. On a large, plain roof, a sheet membrane can be quicker and better value.

What weather do you need to apply it?

The surface has to be clean and dry, and the coating needs dry conditions while it cures. We keep an eye on the forecast, will not coat a damp roof, and protect fresh work if a shower threatens, so start dates can move a little with the weather.

Can I walk on a coated balcony or roof?

Once fully cured, yes. Polyurethane membranes are tough and flexible, and they cope with everyday foot traffic on balconies and walkways. We tell you when the surface is ready to use, and advise putting pads under furniture so metal feet do not scuff the finish over time.

Why use Lava 20 or Mariseal instead of mastic or a quick patch?

Mastic and quick patches cover a leak for a while, but they crack and peel as the roof moves with the seasons. A polyurethane membrane is bonded to the surface and stays flexible, so it moves with the roof instead of pulling away from it. It costs more than a tube of sealant, and it is a genuine repair rather than a stopgap.

How It Works

How a Liquid Waterproofing Job Runs

Preparation does most of the work on a liquid membrane, so most of our time goes in before the first coat.

Step 01

Survey & Moisture Check

We check the surface for soundness, trapped water and movement. A liquid coating bonds to what is underneath, so anything loose, damp or cracking has to be dealt with first.

Step 02

Cleaning & Repair

Moss, dirt and loose material are removed, blisters are cut out, and any damaged boards or failed patches are repaired so the surface is firm and dry.

Step 03

Priming & Reinforcing

We apply the primer that suits the surface, then bed reinforcing fleece into the first coat at joints, cracks, corners and upstands, where movement is most likely.

Step 04

Coating & Curing

The membrane goes on in coats to an even thickness across the whole area. Once it has cured, we check the finish, clear the site and let you know when the surface can take foot traffic.
