Benefits of Professional Chimney Repairs

A chimney stack is the most exposed brickwork on your house. It takes rain from every direction, freezes and thaws all winter and carries the weight of pots and flaunching on top.

Chimney Repairs & Servicing

We inspect the stack from the pots down to where it meets the roof, then carry out what it needs: repointing, rebuilding loose courses, renewing flaunching, replacing pots and fitting cowls or bird guards. Where the flashing has failed, we renew the leadwork on the same visit.

  • Chimney repointing
  • Partial and full stack rebuilds
  • Flaunching renewed
  • Chimney pot replacement and repairs
  • Cowls and bird guards fitted
  • Lead flashing and soakers

Chimney Repairs Roofing Benefits

Most chimney leaks start in one of three places: the mortar joints, the flaunching on top or the flashing where the stack meets the roof. Because we are roofers as well as chimney specialists, we can put all of them right in one visit rather than sending you off to separate trades.

  • Chimney repointing with matched mortar
  • Lead flashings, soakers and back gutters
  • Flaunching and pot bedding
  • Rebuilding loose or leaning stacks
  • Storm-damaged chimneys made safe
  • Cowls fitted to keep rain out

FAQs

FAQs about our chimney repair service

Here are answers to the chimney questions we are asked most often.

What is chimney flaunching?

Flaunching is the sloped cap of mortar on top of the stack that holds the pots in place and sheds rain away from them. Because it faces straight up at the weather, it cracks with age and frost. Once it breaks up, pots can work loose and water soaks into the top of the stack, so we renew it as part of most chimney repairs.

Why is there a damp patch on my chimney breast?

Water is usually getting in at the top or the base of the stack. Common causes are eroded mortar joints, cracked flaunching, an open flue letting rain fall straight down, or lead that has peeled back off the stack. Condensation inside an unused flue can leave similar marks.

Does my chimney need repointing or rebuilding?

If the bricks are solid and the stack stands straight, repointing is normally enough. If bricks are crumbling, the stack is leaning, or the top courses move when touched, those courses need taking down and rebuilding. We take photos from the roof so you can see for yourself what we are describing.

Can you fit a cowl or bird guard?

Yes. A cowl helps keep rain out of the flue and can reduce downdraught, while a bird guard stops nesting birds blocking it, which matters if you use an open fire or stove. We choose the right type for how the flue is used and fix it securely so it stays in place in high winds.

Can a damaged chimney be dangerous?

It can. Loose bricks, a cracked pot or broken flaunching can come down in strong winds, and a badly leaning stack puts strain on the roof around it. If you find brick or pieces of pot on the roof or the ground, keep people clear of the area below and phone us straight away: our emergency roofers answer 24/7, 365 days a year.
