What Is a PVC Membrane Roof?

PVC membrane is a thin, flexible single-ply sheet made from plasticised polyvinyl chloride, usually reinforced with a polyester scrim. It comes in rolls, and where two sheets overlap we fuse them together with a hot-air welding gun. The heat melts the two layers into each other, so every joint ends up as strong and watertight as the sheet on either side of it.

That welded joint is what sets PVC apart from rubber and felt. It lets us cover large roofs made up of many sheets, and form tight details around rooflights, vents, plant supports and pipes, without relying on tapes or adhesives at the laps.

Where PVC Membrane Works Best

PVC is our first suggestion for roofs that are too big, or too busy, for a single sheet of rubber. These are the jobs it handles best.

Commercial Flat Roofs

Offices, shops and business units often have wide flat roofs carrying air handling plant, extract fans and access hatches. Welded PVC copes with all of those penetrations, and it can be mechanically fastened to metal, concrete or timber decks.

Large Home Extensions

Where a rear extension runs the full width of a house, or wraps around a corner, PVC lets us join several sheets on site with welded laps instead of glued ones, so size is never a reason to compromise on the joints.

Roofs with Plant & Rooflights

Roof domes, lantern lights, soil pipes and air conditioning units all need a neat, watertight collar. PVC can be shaped and welded around each one, and walkway pads stop maintenance visits from scuffing the membrane.

Common questions about single-ply PVC roofs, answered plainly.

What is the difference between PVC and EPDM?

Both are single-ply membranes, but they are joined differently. EPDM is rubber and is usually laid in one sheet, with any joins made using primer and tape. PVC is a thermoplastic, so its laps are welded with hot air into one fused joint.

Can PVC membrane go over my old felt roof?

It can, as long as the old felt is firmly bonded and the deck below is sound. PVC and bitumen should never be in direct contact, so a separation layer always goes between the two. If the felt is blistered or the boards are soft, we strip back to the deck instead.

Can a PVC roof be repaired?

Yes, and usually neatly. After cleaning the surface, we can weld a patch of new membrane over a tear or puncture and reweld any lap that has opened. The repair becomes part of the roof itself rather than a sticky patch sitting on top of it.

Is PVC suitable for a house, or only commercial buildings?

It works well on homes too, particularly larger extensions, flat roofs with several rooflights, and roofs that turn a corner. For a small, simple extension, EPDM rubber or GRP may be better value, and we will tell you so when we price the job.

Can I walk on a PVC membrane roof?

For occasional maintenance, yes. Where someone needs regular access to plant, gutters or rooflights, we weld walkway pads along the route so boots and tools stay off the main membrane. PVC is not a terrace finish, so for a balcony or seating area we would suggest GRP or a liquid coating.

How It Works

How We Install a PVC Membrane Roof

Every PVC roof we fit follows the same careful order, whatever its size.

Step 01

Survey & Specification

We inspect the roof, check the deck and drainage, and note every penetration. Your free quote then sets out the membrane, fixing method, insulation and trims we propose to use.

Step 02

Deck Preparation

Old coverings are stripped or overlaid as agreed. Because PVC must never sit directly on bitumen, we lay a separation fleece wherever old felt stays in place, then fit insulation if needed.

Step 03

Laying & Welding

The membrane is mechanically fixed or fully adhered, depending on the deck. Each lap is welded with hot air and then probed along its full length to confirm the weld is sound.

Step 04

Detailing & Handover

We weld collars around pipes and vents, dress the membrane up the walls, fit PVC-coated metal trims, and clear the site before walking you round the finished roof.
