Loft Insulation

Loft Insulation Laid by Roofers

Heat rises, and in a house with a thin or patchy layer of insulation in the attic, a good share of it carries straight on into the roof space. Many older homes still have the few centimetres that were put down when the house was built, often flattened, gapped or pushed aside over the years by people storing boxes or working on wiring.

  • First layer between the joists
  • Second layer laid across them
  • Loft hatch insulated and draught-sealed
  • Pipes and tank in the loft lagged
  • Old, compressed insulation lifted where needed
  • Waste and offcuts taken away

Ventilation at the Eaves

A warmer house below means a colder loft above, and a cold loft has to be ventilated. Warm, damp air from the house finds its way up into the roof space, and if it cannot get out it settles as condensation on the underside of the felt and the timbers.

Eaves Kept Open

We stop the insulation short of the eaves or fit eaves trays so air can come in through the soffit vents and move up under the roof. The ceiling below still gets covered right to the wall plate.

Signs of a Poorly Ventilated Loft

Drips forming on the underside of the felt, black mould on the rafters or a musty smell in the attic all suggest moist air is trapped. We check for these before adding more insulation and advise on extra vents if the roof needs them.

Loft Boarding & Storage

Most people want somewhere to keep the Christmas decorations, and the usual mistake is to lay boards straight onto the joists over new insulation. That squashes it flat, and flattened insulation does far less work than the same material left at its full depth.

We fix loft legs to the joists to raise the boarding above the insulation, so you keep a storage platform and a safe walkway to the water tank without giving up the warmth you have just paid for. The area boarded can be as large or as small as you need.

FAQs

FAQs About Our Loft Insulation Service

These are the questions we are asked most often when we survey an attic for insulation.

I already have some insulation. Is it worth topping up?

Often, yes. Older houses commonly have a single thin layer that sits level with or below the tops of the joists, which leaves the timber itself acting as a cold bridge. A second layer laid across the joists covers them and adds depth where it counts.

Will insulating the loft cause condensation?

It can if the loft is not ventilated, because the roof space becomes colder once heat stops escaping into it. That is why we keep the eaves open, fit trays where needed and seal the hatch so less moist air gets up there. If we see signs that the roof needs extra ventilation, we tell you before the work goes ahead.

Can I still use my attic for storage?

Yes. We raise any boarding on loft legs fixed to the joists, so the insulation underneath keeps its full depth and the boards sit above it. That gives you a usable storage area and a walkway to the tank or hatch.

What happens to the water tank and pipes?

Pipes running through the loft are lagged and the cold water tank is insulated on its sides and lid. We leave the area directly under the tank uninsulated on purpose, so a little warmth from the room below keeps the water from freezing in a cold snap.

Do you insulate rooms in the roof or between the rafters?

This page covers insulation at ceiling level, laid on the attic floor. Rooms in the roof and insulation between rafters need a different build-up and careful attention to ventilation. If that is what you have, tell us when you get in touch and we will look at it during the survey.

Why Choose Us for Your Loft Insulation?

Insulating an attic is straightforward work, but getting the airflow right at the eaves decides whether the roof stays dry afterwards.
