Benefits of a Professional Slate Roof Installation

Slate is one of the longest-lasting coverings you can put on a building, but only if it goes on correctly. Each slate needs the right headlap, the right fixing and a straight, evenly gauged batten line, or rain will track back underneath in the wind-driven weather this side of the country gets every winter.

Slate Roof Benefits

A well laid slate roof keeps its colour, shrugs off frost and will not burn. It needs very little upkeep, and when a single slate is damaged it can be swapped out on its own without disturbing the rest of the roof.

  • Very long service life when laid well
  • Non-combustible roof covering
  • Colour that does not fade
  • Individual slates can be replaced
  • Suits period and modern homes
  • Natural or fibre cement options

FAQs

FAQs about our slate roofing service

These are the slate roof questions we hear most often on surveys.

Why do slates slip?

Usually because the nails holding them have corroded. Older slate roofs were often fixed with iron nails, which rust away over the decades and let slates slide down the roof. Roofers call this nail sickness.

What is the difference between natural slate and fibre cement slate?

Natural slate is quarried stone, split into sheets, with a slightly varied surface and a very long life. Fibre cement slate, such as Cedral, is manufactured to a uniform size and colour and weighs less. Both make a good roof.

Can you reuse the slates already on my roof?

Sometimes. On a re-roof we check each slate as it comes off. Sound slates can be cleaned, re-holed and laid again, which helps an older house keep its character.

Do slate roofs need much maintenance?

Very little. An inspection every few years, or after a big storm, is usually enough to catch a slipped slate or a tired flashing early. Keeping gutters clear and dealing with heavy moss stops water backing up under the bottom courses.

Can you repair just one broken slate?

Yes. We draw out the broken slate, slide in a matching replacement and secure it with a tingle or hook so the surrounding slates are left undisturbed. It is one of the quickest repairs we carry out, and it stops a single crack from letting water onto the membrane and timbers below.

Professional Slate Roof Repairs

Not every tired slate roof needs replacing. We often find a roof can be given many more years by refixing slipped slates, replacing cracked ones and renewing the lead at chimneys and valleys. We will always say when a repair is the sensible choice, and just as clearly when it is not.

  • Slipped and missing slates refixed
  • Cracked slates replaced
  • Ridge and hip repairs on slate
  • Lead valleys and flashings renewed
  • Slate extension and porch roofs
  • Inspections after storms
