Benefits of a Professional Felt Roof Installation

A felt roof is only as good as the way it is built up. We lay a modern system in layers: a base sheet fixed to the deck, an underlay bonded over it, then a cap sheet with mineral chippings that protect the bitumen from sunlight.

Felt Roof Benefits

Felt has covered Irish flat roofs for generations because it is affordable, quick to lay and easy to repair. A well-built modern system is far tougher than the single-layer felt people remember from old garages and sheds.

  • Often the lowest-cost flat roof covering
  • Several layers, so one fault rarely leaks
  • Mineral finish stands up to sun and rain
  • Local repairs without stripping the roof
  • Suits extensions, garages and dormers
  • Can go over new insulation boards

FAQs

FAQs about our felt roofing service

Here are the questions homeowners ask us most often before booking a felt roof.

How long does a felt roof last?

It depends on the system, the quality of the installation and how much sun and foot traffic the roof gets. A modern multi-layer felt roof on a sound deck will outlast the single-layer felt found on many older garages by a wide margin. We give you a realistic view of your own roof when we survey it.

Can you repair my felt roof instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Splits, blisters and failed upstands can usually be cut out and patched with new felt bonded into the existing layers. If the deck feels soft when we walk on it, or water has been getting in for a long time, a patch will not hold and we will recommend a re-cover instead.

Is torch-on felt safe to use on my house?

Torch-on felt is bonded with a gas torch, so our roofers treat it as hot work and take particular care near timber fascias, vents and windows. On tight details, or right beside anything that could catch, a cold-applied or self-adhesive felt product can be used in place of the flame.

Does a felt roof need any maintenance?

Very little. Clear leaves and moss from the outlets and gutters so water can drain away, and look out for bare patches where the mineral chippings have worn off. If you spot a blister or a split, a small repair done promptly costs far less than fixing the ceiling underneath.

How long does it take to fit a new felt roof?

Roof size, access and the condition of the deck all play a part. We give you an expected timescale with your quote, and because felt must go down on a dry deck, we plan around the forecast and leave the roof weathertight at the end of every working day.

Professional Felt Roof Installation

A new felt roof starts with the deck. We strip the old covering, check every board, and replace anything that has softened or warped, because felt laid over a weak deck will crack along the board joints. If you want the room below to be warmer, we can fit rigid insulation boards before the new layers go down.

  • Strip-out and deck repairs
  • Insulated warm roof upgrades
  • Upstands and wall flashings
  • New drip edges and trims
  • Outlet and gutter connections
  • Site cleared when we finish
