What’s Included

Leadwork Is Commonly Used on:

Lead goes wherever a roof meets something else, or wherever water has to be turned through an awkward angle. It can be dressed by hand into almost any shape, it lasts for generations when it is fixed correctly, and it copes with the natural movement of a building far better than rigid materials.

  • Chimney flashings, soakers and back gutters
  • Valleys between roof slopes
  • Lead gullies and parapet gutters
  • Abutments where a roof meets a wall
  • Dormer cheeks and tops
  • Bay window and porch roofs
  • Flat lead roofs on older buildings

Leadwork & Gulley Repairs

Lead fails for predictable reasons. Pieces cut too long cannot expand and contract freely, so they buckle and split. Fixings that pin the sheet too tightly cause cracking, and old clips or wedges loosen until a flashing pulls out of its mortar joint.

  • Site surveys before any work
  • Lead welding and patch repairs
  • Flashings refixed and repointed
  • New lead valleys and gullies
  • Lead sheet roofing installed
  • Gully clearing and upkeep

FAQs

Leadwork FAQs

Common questions about lead flashings, valleys and gullies.

Where is lead used on a roof?

Mostly around chimneys as flashings and soakers, in valleys and gullies, on bay window roofs and wherever a roof meets a wall.

How do I know if my leadwork has failed?

Damp patches around a chimney breast, stains where a roof meets a wall, or lead that has split, lifted or slipped are the usual signs.

Can lead flashing be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Small splits and lifted edges can be dressed back and resealed. Lead that has cracked along its length or pulled out of the mortar joint is better replaced.

Do you quote before starting leadwork?

Yes. We look at the roof first and give you a free written quote before any work is booked.
